Can I use the French health care system

US citizens have access to France’s health care system and can consult a general practitioner, a specialist, a dentist or go to the emergency room of any hospital. You can also have a doctor visit you at your hotel. Your hotel will have details of a local doctor. There is also a huge network of drugstores all over the country, signposted with luminous green crosses. Most keep the same hours as shops but there is usually one in each town that is open 24 hours. Some medicines are available over the counter but others will require a prescription from a doctor.

How is the health care system in France?

The French health care system is excellent. In fact, it was voted the best health system in the world by the World Health Organisation in 2000. You can expect to receive just as good care as back at home.

Do I need a medical insurance to travel in France?

Travel insurance, including medical insurance for France, is advised for all holidays. It is best to consult your medical insurance provider in the US to confirm whether the policy applies overseas and whether it will cover emergency expenses such as medical evacuation and repatriation. Doctors and hospitals often require payment on the spot for treatment.
