The Palais Garnier, otherwise known as the Opera Garnier or the Paris Opera, is a world-famous opera house which will surprise you with the opulence and beauty of its decor. Built at the end of the 19th century, the Opera Garnier has a spectacular grand staircase and foyers which are richly decorated with paintings and sculptures. The theatre itself is magnificent with its red and gold decoration - its ceiling was painted by Marc Chagall in 1964 with scenes of world renowned performances.
Architect Charles Garnier created the plans for exuberant mix of ostentatious and eclectic baroque architecture of the Opera Garnier in 1860. Today, the Palais Garnier undoubtedly embodies the architecture that best represents the art of the Second Empire, and stands as a symbol of the luxury and pleasures of the French capital. 73 sculptors and 14 painters worked on it until its inauguration in January 1875. Measuring 172m in length and 124m in breadth, the Opera Garnier is the largest opera house in Europe, with the capacity to welcome more than 2000 people.
A professional guide will take you around the Opera Garnier and will relate its historical and social aspects as well as its architectural splendor and its artistic life. The visit includes the library museum, the Rotonda and Glacier Gallery, the Grand Foyer, the theatre itself and the current exhibition.
